Origin of Aerith's surname and given name
Origin of the name Aerith:
It was named based on a phonetic variation of "Earth."

Origin of the surname Gainsborough:
—On what basis was Aerith's tragic story written this way?
【Nojima】: Although the story script had not been fully decided when I joined the development team, I had already received the request to "write a script in which the heroine disappears midway through the story." Afterwards, we decided to have Aerith disappear midway, and Tifa, as a witness of Cloud's childhood, became the character who could remain until the end of the story. Because Aerith disappears midway, the scenes before her disappearance were deliberately staged using a technique full of love for the event sequences. By the way, Aerith's surname "Gainsborough" was borrowed from the French singer Serge Gainsbourg。
(Note: Nojima himself loves playing music.)

Aerith's importance in the game
① Aerith is the most important presence in many people's hearts
Aerith is the last surviving member of the "Cetra" race, a people who could speak with the Planet and could guide people to the supreme happiness known as the "Promised Land." Her parents were killed by the Shinra Company, and she herself was hunted as an experimental subject. Despite such tragic experiences, she remains cheerful and humorous, never giving up hope at any time. Though she returned to the Lifestream in the battle to protect the Planet, even afterward, in the hearts of many, she remains an important presence。

② Aerith is more lively and takes the initiative
—How did you design each character's personality?
"Nomura, who did the character designs, provided us with the basic settings for each character, and we wrote the script and dialogue based on that. For Tifa and Aerith, we wanted them to have opposite appearances and personalities. Just looking at the art, Tifa might seem like the more energetic one, but in fact it is Aerith who is more lively—or rather, the woman who takes the initiative."

③ A heroine who leaves a deep impression
She sells flowers to Cloud, whom she meets in Sector 8, for only 1 gil, but in the Sector 6 slums she charges men with ulterior motives as much as 300 or even 500 gil. Her cheerful and resolute personality, along with the shocking event in a certain scene, made her a heroine who leaves a deep impression in players' memories 。

④ Aerith is an important character in the journey
She is a beautiful woman with a mysterious aura.
She makes her living selling flowers in the mako city, but by a chance encounter she meets Cloud, and plays an enormously important role in their journey.
She is better suited to magic-centered combat than to attacking with weapons.

⑤ She plays an important role in approaching the mystery
The story progresses from the protagonist Cloud's point of view, and the heroine Aerith opens his heart, playing an important role in approaching the mystery. It is through her that we approach the truth of the story.

⑥Aerith's fate is one of the very important reasons FF7 has been passed down to the present
Thoughts on "that event" that made FF7 a special work passed down through the years
—What I'm about to say may relate to that event, and it's a somewhat sensitive topic... This time, the official announcement for the FF7 Remake stated that the story will depict up to "the Forgotten Capital". What happened there in the original... to be honest, even someone like me who never played the original knows that ending。
More than 25 years have passed since the original FF7 was released, and it is still being passed down today. What are your thoughts on this, Mr. Nomura?
[Nomura]: In the original, I decided the flow of that part, and at the time it caused a huge reaction, and we received quite harsh opinions as well.
But on the other hand, I believe that was also the part that touched players' hearts deeply. At the time, I felt that kind of presentation in games had become a "symbolic technique." So, with a feeling of defiance, I wanted to depict, even within a game, "pain" and a vivid sense of urgency。
—In fact, that scene has become one of the symbols of FFVII's specialness. Even without playing it in real time, you can't help hearing about it.
[Nomura]: Actually, after the release, when I was talking with Mr. Uematsu, he said: "Without that fate, perhaps FFVII would not have been passed down to the present.”
I think, that indeed became one of the very important reasons why the game Final Fantasy VII came to be considered special。

⑦ The concept of the original version was life, and its most striking expression was Aerith
At the "G-CON 2024" conference in South Korea, Yoshinori Kitase and Naoki Hamaguchi gave a presentation related to FF7.
The presentation mentioned that the concept of the original Final Fantasy VII was "life," and its most striking expression was Aerith's existence; after she loses her life, her legacy is carried on, and the wishes she left behind are fulfilled by the people who remain—this is the theme of the story.

⑧ Aerith's death had a huge impact on the entire development staff
"The idea of Aerith dying in the story had a huge impact on the entire development staff." Toriyama explained, "I personally decided to go all out in depicting Aerith, making her a character who was irreplaceable when players were preparing to face that moment."

⑨ Aerith's death is one of the most memorable moments in gaming
IGN ranks the 100 most memorable video game moments in history
MEGHAN SULLIVAN: Countless characters have died in video games over the years, but very few characters have resonated as strongly with players as Aerith Gainsborough from Final Fantasy VII。
Aerith was not the first Final Fantasy character to sacrifice herself for the party (we will never forget you, Galuf!), but unlike previous sacrifices, she was not just a temporary companion. Aerith was an important member who not only provided invaluable healing support in battle but also played an important role in Cloud's growth. In other words, she was a main character in Final Fantasy VII, and to some extent even the main character, which made her death all the more shocking.
Sephiroth's stabbing Aerith to death with the blade of the Masamune while she was praying to save the world is an outrageous act of cowardice, and Aerith's expression during Sephiroth's attack also reflected the player's emotions: one moment she was smiling, because everything was alright; the next moment she was staring in disbelief at the sword piercing her body, and then fell to the ground with a thud. The whole thing came so suddenly and violently that both the player and the protagonist were left completely stunned.
But the most heart-wrenching moment comes after the subsequent battle with Sephiroth, when Cloud gently places Aerith's body into the Lifestream and watches it slowly sink into the depths. The art direction and musical cues here are both superb: as Aerith disappears, every shot grips the heart—Cloud's grief-stricken expression and every softly struck piano key in the background. It is one of the most emotional farewells in video game history; even now, 20 years later, hearing the first few notes of Aerith's Theme still brings tears to one's eyes.

Water represents Aerith
The church is foreshadowing that says "Aerith will appear!" In the story, the injured Cloud and Tifa fell onto the flower bed here and were healed. Also, Aerith's image is "water", so we used "water" as the impression for the staging.

The rain makes people feel Aerith
Developer secrets
[Nomura]: At first, after defeating Sephiroth, the scene would suddenly cut to the church—there was none of the series of events with Kadaj, and there was no Kadaj disappearing in the rain, nor the scene of feeling Aerith here. Kadaj and the others were also people who needed to be saved. I think it was great that this was achieved despite being a tall order.

Tifa, who smiles at the presence of Aerith, holds Aerith dear, and this is Tifa's genuine, heartfelt feeling.

The rain-soaked chapter is titled the Great Gospel (Aerith's Limit Break)

The pink ribbon represents remembering Aerith
[Nomura]: Initially, I noticed that none of the companions were talking about Aerith. So I came up with the idea of having everyone wear something as a silent symbol. I had them wear a pink ribbon to show that they had never forgotten Aerith。

In AC, the companions fighting to save the Planet all wear pink ribbons. When it comes to pink ribbons, one thinks of Aerith, the one who fell in battle in FFVII. This ribbon embodies everyone's feeling of "never forgetting her". Also, although Marlene doesn't tie the ribbon around her arm, her hairstyle feels very much like Aerith.

In scene 04-09, Zack gave Aerith a pink hair ribbon as a "memento of their meeting." The ribbon was used together with the white materia, her mother's keepsake, in Final Fantasy VII and Crisis Core. Also, in Advent Children, during the battle against Jenova, the people who fought, along with Barret's daughter Marlene, wore pink ribbons somewhere on their bodies so as not to forget her.

Aerith is not a conventional heroine
[Kitase]: When I first read Nojima's script, I strongly felt that the image of the heroine was very fresh。She wasn't the clichéd type of character who was completely devoted to the hero or had a strong sense of justice, and Aerith even lived in the slums. These points felt very fresh to me. The setup with two heroines, Aerith and Tifa, and the protagonist wavering between them was novel for that era as well. As for Sephiroth, although he appears from the very beginning of the story, he is also the final enemy, like a rival-type presence. I think it may be precisely these elements that hadn't existed in past "FF" games that are the secret to their popularity.

The ill-fated heroine
(Aerith, Cloud, and Tifa were mentioned earlier.)
【Nomura】: I think the staff making RPGs at the time had probably grown tired of the RPGs of the past. There's always a villain, and then a hero appears to defeat him, and so on. Everyone was tired of that good-triumphs-over-evil worldview, and really wanted to try doing the things that had previously been considered taboo.
For example, a weak protagonist,a heroine who suffers misfortune... I suppose people just wanted to try things that hadn't been done before.
(The heroine of Final Fantasy VII, who met a tragic fate in the story and gave fans an enormous shock in the year of the game's release (1997) — Aerith. In Kingdom Hearts II, she appears in high spirits alongside Cloud and the others.)

Aerith is a transfer student
[Nojima]: In terms of creative inspiration, Tifa was "a childhood friend who had been together since kindergarten," while Aerith was "a girl who transferred in midway and then transferred away again shortly after". Because her scenes were also few, we had to make sure the transfer student's impact would become greater。

More interested in love than in magic
She is a beautiful woman with a somewhat mysterious air.
She was once a flower girl in Midgar, but by chance she met Cloud and played an important role in their journey.
Because she possesses mysterious powers, she seems able to use magic, but she is more concerned about the triangle surrounding Cloud and Tifa…?

Aerith's appearance was designed to make her a radiant heroine
—That's valuable insider information. So how did you approach the design?
[Nomura]: When designing Aerith, I consciously made her into a radiant heroine. Since Cloud carries a hint of darkness both outwardly and inwardly, and Barret also comes across as rough and hard-edged, it was like adding a touch of brightness to the whole, so I used red for Aerith's outfit and designed a bright hair color. Besides, polygon-based games of that time couldn't render flowing textures or fine hair detail well, so her hair was designed to be tied up (laughs).

Aerith's death is realistic, not dramatic
Although Cloud and Sephiroth are both examples of excellent design and characterization, the most famous and most unforgettable character in FFVII is neither the protagonist nor the central villain, but a flower girl whose on-screen time makes up only a little more than a third of the game's discs.
[Tetsuya Nomura] (the character designer responsible for both Sephiroth and Aerith): Aerith's death and Sephiroth's fate remain subjects of debate among fans worldwide. On the story side, I wanted people to feel something strong, to understand something. Back when we were designing this game, I was frustrated by the common dramatic cliché, that the protagonist deeply loves someone and therefore must sacrifice themselves, dying in a dramatic way to express that love. We found this to be true of games and films both East and West. But I wanted to say something different, something realistic. I mean, setting that kind of example for people?
Kitase insisted that art and culture place too much value on dramatic deaths: "The real world is quite different. Just look around you. Nobody wants to die that way. People die of illness or in accidents. Death comes suddenly, with no good or bad to it. What it leaves behind is not a dramatic feeling, but an enormous emptiness. When you lose someone you deeply love, you feel a huge void and think: 'If only I had known this would happen, I would have done things differently'. That is what I wanted players to feel through Aerith's death relatively early in the game—a sense of reality rather than Hollywood"。

The white materia in the hair ribbon
The large bow in her long hair and her long dress give an impression of gentle elegance. In the bow that ties up her hair is a white materia, a memento of her mother.

The inherited power
Aerith's mother was a Cetra and her father was human, making her the last of the Cetra bloodline. Although her abilities as a member of the race are somewhat weaker, she has inherited mysterious powers, such as hearing the voice of the Planet and sensing the life and death of people.

Facing her fate alone
As the last descendant of the Cetra, Aerith carried a heavy fate, yet she never showed any distress. When she realized that she truly needed her power, she made her decision and acted on it alone, without telling her companions.

Jumps up to attack enemies with full force, and also cares a lot about her appearance
She is skilled at magic and wields a staff. Though she lacks physical strength, when performing normal attacks she leaps up and strikes enemies with all her might。Upon victory, she checks whether her bangs or clothes are disheveled and tidies them up, which gives her a rather feminine quality.

Aerith is strong
She looks like a delicate young girl, but in truth she has a strong will. Once she has decided on something, she never yields, and she earnestly pulls the people around her along.

Aerith is straightforward and positive
Though she appears refined and quiet, she is positive, and once she has thought something through she says it directly. Her positive attitude and unflappable nature surely stem from the harsh experiences she has been through since childhood.

Great Gospel
Aerith, praying with the staff held in her hands, brings down a rain of blessings.
Aerith keeps praying for a while, and when the rain stops, angels descend from the clouds.
Three angels in the sky descend with dazzling light.

The apparition in the church after her passing
First, after finishing the game, find the key that opens the gate of Sector 5 in the Bone Village (it can be found among the 'Normal Treasures').
After using this key to enter Midgar, try going to the church in the Sector 5 slums.
There, you may see a somewhat familiar figure together with the children tending the flowers. But when you get closer... Could it be an illusion summoned by a small hope in your heart?
You run toward it without thinking, but it immediately disappears.
Drawn by memories of the past, you go to the church and see... could that figure be?

The wish to ride the airship
At the bottom of the ship, Aerith says with sparkling eyes that one day she wants to ride the Highwind, the airship she saw at Junon Airport. If you know how the story unfolds afterward, this is hard to hear...
Later, Cid, seemingly sensing Aerith's feelings, says, 'I really wish I could let her ride my Highwind.'

Advent Children billboard

The flower field in the Advent Children ending
[Nomura]: The ending credits are live-action footage shot in Hawaii. Flower fields line both sides of the road, and the flowers are white and yellow, just like the flowers in Aerith's church.

The outstretched hand in Advent Children is a tribute to the original game
The final scene of the battle against Bahamut, in which Aerith stretches out her hand, is a tribute to the final scene of the previous game. This was Tetsuya Nomura's idea. The scene where all of Cloud's companions reunite was in fact carefully planned out.

Pure Heart
【EGM】:Final Fantasy fans chose "Aerith's Theme" as the 《素敌だね》(the Final Fantasy X theme song) B-side track to be rearranged. Did you enjoy writing lyrics for this classic piece? Were you satisfied with their choice?
【Nobuo Uematsu】: The lyrics were not my responsibility; I invited Emiko Shiratori, the singer of the FFIX theme song "Melodies of Life," to write the lyrics. This new song is titled "Pure Heart." I had long heard that "Aerith's Theme" was very popular among fans, so the choice didn't surprise me. But in my view, there are actually other tracks better suited to being adapted into a song than "Aerith's Theme."

Marlene-related
① Quickly hitting it off with Aerith
She quickly hit it off with Aerith, and it seems they exchanged a lot in a short time.

② Inheriting from both Tifa and Aerith
【Nomura】: She is a child Tifa watched grow up and raised, so she is quite level-headed among children her age. Truly a Tifa the Second. But her appearance shows Aerith's influence. Because at the end of FFVII she heard Aerith's voice, so this time too she can sense Aerith。It's the feeling of inheriting from both Aerith and Tifa. The child actress Harusegahara, who voices this character, performed excellently at the audition. Both her normal dialogue and her narration were exactly as we had imagined.

③ The person Marlene loves most
Prologue ~Marlene's Recollection~
Shinra, and the people who opposed Shinra. Sephiroth, who tried to destroy the Planet out of hatred. Those who tried to stop Sephiroth. As many battles as there were, there was just as much sorrow. The person I love most also became part of the Lifestream。

④ Commemorating Aerith with a hairstyle
In AC, the companions who fought to save the Planet all wear pink ribbons. When it comes to pink ribbons, one thinks of Aerith, the one who fell in the battle in FFVII. This ribbon embodies everyone's feeling of "never forgetting her." Also, although Marlene doesn't tie a ribbon on her arm, her hairstyle has quite an Aerith feel。

Aerith's maternal nature
【Nomura】: I think Kadaj and the others chose the Forgotten Capital as their hideout because they knew it was a place Cloud would not approach. However, as for me—as a hidden setting, could it be that they were drawn by Aerith's maternal nature?

The figure that appeared before those who were lost and suffering was like a loving mother.

Two years after returning to the Planet, Aerith still lives on in the hearts of the companions who saved the Planet. Especially in Cloud's heart, Aerith has become a symbol of "the sin of being unable to protect someone important to him," and has become a factor that closes off his heart. She extended a helping hand to Cloud and to the Planet, which was once again in danger. Like a mother, she watches over the entire Planet, allowing everyone to feel her presence in every corner of it.

Q: Do you feel there is any difference between the Aerith you voiced in the previous titles and the Aerith in this work (the Remake)?
【Maaya Sakamoto】: I feel that this work has more lines than ever expressing her innocent, carefree personality. There are also various playful scenes, and I recorded them while looking forward to them. In FFVII: Advent Children, I strongly felt Aerith's mysteriousness and maternal nature, while in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, an ordinary girl's love was depicted, which made her feel more approachable. This time, after overcoming so many hardships, she has become stronger; so that she won't be defeated by fate, I portrayed her as cheerful and full of energy.

The parting that left the deepest impression on Sakaguchi is Aerith's
Q: The theme this time is "parting," but when it comes to the "partings" Sakaguchi created…?
【Sakaguchi】: What left a deep impression was Aerith. Honestly, I never expected such a huge reaction. I also received many questions from players like "Won't you bring her back to life?"… Right now Kitase is working on the remake of "FF7"… what will happen, I wonder? (laughs)

Uematsu's favorite FF character
【Tanaka】: That's right~ Now, on to the next question. From the pen name KinakoMilk and several others—this one too, I know it's a repeated question, but I'd like to ask, "Which character in the FF series do you like the most?" Anyway, the topic has drifted again.
[Uematsu]: This series, huh. Well, I know this conflicts a bit with what was said earlier, but I have an attachment to the one made recently. I think it's Aerith, who in FF7 was surrounded by all sorts of controversy.

For Hamaguchi, what left the deepest impression was losing Aerith
[Hamaguchi]: When I first played FF7, what left the deepest impression? I often say it was losing Aerith。
[Audience]: (applause)
[Hamaguchi]: Thank you (laughs)
It was a time before the internet was widespread, so my friends and I at the time discussed and researched very passionately how to bring her back from the dead. Looking back now, that gaming experience itself was also a joy.

Maaya Sakamoto thinks Aerith is beautiful
To put it in a single word, innocent. Her very existence is a kind of "beauty". This is Aerith's "image" in Cloud's heart, and also Aerith's soul truly speaking to Cloud... Her lines all left a deep impression on me and resonated with me; it was challenging, but I performed it earnestly.

Aerith's Theme
① Composed with the idea that Aerith was waiting for Zack (this publication is unofficial)
—"Aerith's Theme" took first place in a fan popularity vote for FF music (held when FFX was released), and was sung by RIKKI, the singer of《素敵だね》 from FFX.
[Uematsu]: Yes, that's right. But honestly, when I composed it I never expected it to be this popular. There's that scene, isn't there, where Aerith keeps waiting for Zack at the station.
—Yes, "Aerith's Theme" plays there, too.
[Uematsu]: Mm. That's exactly what I had in mind for that scene. In the original there's a description like "Aerith is waiting; day after day, she keeps on waiting," a piece composed to match that scene。
—So that means it wasn't composed for the scene in the City of the Ancients...!?
[Uematsu]: Not at all! (laughs). First there's the scene where Aerith waits for Zack at the station. It's "a piece about a poor woman waiting for someone who never comes"... This might be the first time I've talked about it, too (laughs)

② The concept at the time of its initial creation
[Kitase]: Mr. Uematsu, when you composed "Aerith's Theme," did you already know the tragedy would happen in the story?
[Uematsu]: No, there's a scene in the game where a mother waits for a train at a station, and I think that's where I wrote the music. I wrote the song based on that scene and the information provided by Mr. Toriyama, who was making that event.
This passage is recorded in an official concert program, and it contradicts Nobuo Uematsu's interview in another unofficial magazine; see: Aerith's Theme

③Ideas at the time of composition
[Uematsu]: When I composed the music (played when Aerith dies), I wasn't thinking about her death, but I felt she wasn't a very happy character.
She's really innocent and pure, yet has a tragic life... I realized it could become an important clue....
If I had known that scene would make people cry, I might have done something completely different, something designed to make you cry. But I chose a sad yet beautiful melody, and because it's not the kind of tune you'd usually hear when tragedy strikes, maybe it worked out well. When something is missing, people tend to use their imagination. So since this song doesn't express the feelings of that moment one hundred percent, people may use their imagination to fill in the gaps.

⑤ It expresses a subject unable to resist fate, and describes the mother dying at the station
It opens with Aerith's Theme. It is said that right after finishing composing it, he immediately felt it was a wonderful piece. He reportedly tried to express the theme of "being unable to resist an established fate," and especially when depicting the scene where the mother dies at the station, he poured his heart into creating this music.

⑥ Nobuo Uematsu's favorite piece from FF7
[Uematsu] One-Winged Angel is a particular favorite of mine, and I also like Aerith's Theme. I'm delighted that whenever it's performed at concerts, it always receives great reviews.

The flute, which handles the high notes, produces sound without a reed—an air-reed, flute-like instrument—for some reason it gives a strong impression that it should be played by a beautiful woman, an instrument with high heroine power; in fact it's heavier than expected, and holding it with closed eyes brings a blunt weapon to mind. A heroine holding a long staff—that's right, that's Aerith.

The most memorable PS game titles
For the PS's 30th anniversary, Famitsu ranked Final Fantasy VII first in "memorable PS game titles"
Among them was one player's comment: "Back then there were no games with an OO heroine, so I remember thinking I was 'stuck' in Aerith's OO game progression, having to start over from the beginning, walk the same route again, and despairing at taking the same path. But precisely because of that, it was a story with depth" (zeno)

(Debug Mode can be accessed via GameShark or similar cheat devices; its basic functions mainly allow freely selecting all scenes, cutscenes, and events in the game, as well as changing some settings, such as turning cutscenes and music on/off, changing characters' default names, and viewing the game's font. The kanji on the interface correspond to the original creators)
In the thousand-tatami room, selecting the "love love" entry jumps to the scene of Cloud and Aerith in the Leafy Park.

In the game, opening the menu shows the character names with honorifics in the Japanese version. When entering the room beneath the church, the character names in the English version change to other nouns; here Aerith is called princess (princess), and in the game her final weapon is the Princess Guard (プリンセスガード/Princess Guard)。

In this room, by talking to the nurse and selecting "I'm starting over," then "princess," the player can control the giant Aerith in the room.
When the player steps onto the floor near the giant Aerith, dialogue is triggered: "Hm? You weren't thinking of... stepping on me, were you? I may be a floor, but that doesn't give you the right!!" Stepping on the floor produces a loud noise, and the floor says: "Eyaaaah!! OWW, OWW, OWW... YEOOWWW... !!"

When selecting the last option, Hades, in the dialogue with the giant Aerith, Aerith says, hasn't anyone told you that's Hades.
