① Aerith, Cloud, Leon, and Yuffie are childhood friends

— About Cloud, I'd like to know some background details. Did he come from Hollow Bastion?
【Nomura】: In the setting of Kingdom Hearts, you could say that's right。
— If that's the case, then when Cid fled Hollow Bastion with the other members, was Cloud left behind?
【Nomura】: He was merely separated in the confusion; he wasn't left behind (laughs). Cid and the others escaped in the chaos as well.

Kingdom Hearts 2

① Character Introduction

She is a 23-year-old female member of the Restoration Committee, dedicated to rebuilding the town. A year ago, she taught Sora and his friends much about the "key" and supported them as they set out on their journey. She is a friend of Leon, Cid, and Yuffie, all of whom left their hometowns to fight the darkness together.
Aerith, who once supported Sora, now focuses on rebuilding her home. Although she does not appear on the battlefield, when the town falls into crisis she uses her mysterious powers to fight back. Her outfit is in the "Before Crisis -FFVII-" style.

② Aerith Belongs to Neither Light nor Darkness, Yet Possesses Both

—Mr. Nomura said, "If Sephiroth is Cloud's darkness, then Tifa is the light." So what does Mr. Nojima think Aerith's position is?
[Nojima]: The way I see it, Aerith belongs to neither light nor darkness. She stands in another world, and if she wishes, she can go to any world. Untouched by light or darkness, she is an independent existence. To put it coolly, her possessing both light and darkness makes her the most solid existence.

④ The heroine who met with misfortune

(Aerith, Cloud, and Tifa were mentioned earlier.)
[Nomura]: I think the staff who made those RPGs at the time had probably grown tired of RPGs as they were. There's always a villain, and then a hero appears to defeat him, and so on. Everyone was tired of that good-triumphs-over-evil worldview, and really wanted to try doing the things that had been considered taboo in the past.
For example, a weak protagonist,a heroine who meets with misfortune... I suppose everyone just wanted to try things that hadn't been done before.
(Aerith met a tragic fate in the story and, in the year of the game’s release (1997), gave fans an enormous shock as the heroine of Final Fantasy VII. In Kingdom Hearts II, she appears in high spirits alongside Cloud and the others.)
