【Nomura】: Aya is rounder than Lightning; because she's a character drawn from the same era as Cloud and the others, her eyes are a bit bigger and the stylization is stronger. Other than that, I just paid some attention to the degree of upturned eyes. The Aya I was first commissioned to draw, Mr. Sakaguchi said to give her a ponytail like Aerith's. But as I kept changing elements, kept making it more stylized to distinguish her from Aerith, I decided to simply cut the hair at the back short.
Regarding how Aya's design for "Parasite Eve" was completed, Mr. Itabashi (also) said that at the time he didn't know it was for the protagonist of "Parasite Eve"; he simply responded to Mr. Hironobu Sakaguchi's request to "draw a character like Aerith (with long sideburns hanging down)" and designed the first version. It's said Mr. Sakaguchi liked this design very much. Later, after Mr. Nomura learned that Aya was the protagonist of "Parasite Eve," he said "In that case, this design won't do," so he redrew a version, which became the current Aya
